What is going on?

Bruxism means clenching or grinding your teeth. It can happen when you are awake, often without noticing, or while you sleep.

TMJ is your jaw joint, just in front of your ears. When the joint and chewing muscles get sore or click, people call it TMJ disorder or TMD.

Common triggers

  • Stress, anxiety and concentrating hard
  • Caffeine, alcohol and smoking
  • Some medications, including some antidepressants and ADHD medications
  • Sleep problems such as snoring and sleep apnea
  • Mouth habits like constant gum chewing or cheek biting
  • Bite problems and past jaw injuries, like a car accident

What can happen if you ignore it

Teeth

Worn, flattened, chipped or cracked teeth, plus broken fillings and crowns.

Pain

Tired jaw muscles, face and neck soreness, and dull headaches at the temples.

Jaw joint

Clicking, popping or a jaw that will not open all the way.

For many people grinding stays mild. A check now helps protect your teeth later.

Jaw muscle injections with Dysport

TMJ treatment with Dysport for jaw clenching: what a visit is like

  1. Assessment. We look at your teeth, jaw joints and muscles and ask about sleep, stress and headaches.
  2. Talk it through. We review your health history, medications and allergies, then explain your options, the possible benefits and risks, and the cost, so you can decide.
  3. Treatment. The injections take about 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. Follow up. The effect usually starts to build within one to two weeks and wears off gradually over several months. We check in on how it is going.

Possible side effects can include tenderness or bruising where the needle goes in, headache, and a temporary weaker feeling when chewing. Rarely, the effect can spread beyond the injected area. Dysport is not suitable for people with a cow's milk protein allergy or certain muscle or nerve conditions, which is why we review your health history first.

Good to know: using Dysport or Botox for grinding and jaw pain is an off label use in Canada, meaning it is not one of the uses Health Canada has approved for these products. Research suggests it may reduce pain and grinding for some people, but the evidence is still limited. Results are not guaranteed.

Who provides it: all treatments at West Block Dental are given by Dr. Katherina Nguyen, DDS. Price: $10 per unit of Dysport. The number of units depends on your jaw muscles and is confirmed at your consult. See prices.

Grinding and TMJ questions

Is this Botox?

Not exactly. We use Dysport, a muscle relaxing medicine similar to Botox. Both are botulinum toxin type A. For clenching and grinding, small amounts are injected into the jaw muscles to help them relax. Using either one for the jaw is off label in Canada.

Dysport vs Botox for jaw clenching: what is the difference?

Both are botulinum toxin type A and work the same basic way, by relaxing the muscle. They are made by different companies, and their doses are measured differently, so units are not interchangeable. One 2025 study in people with night grinding found similar pain relief with both. Neither is approved in Canada for grinding or TMJ, so both are used off label for the jaw.

Is Dysport a Botox alternative for jaw clenching?

Yes, Dysport is another botulinum toxin type A medicine that can be used instead of Botox to relax the jaw muscles. Dr. Kat will talk with you about whether jaw injections suit you at all, and whether a nightguard should come first.

Do you offer Dysport for TMJ and jaw clenching in Edmonton?

Yes. Dr. Kat offers Dysport injections into the jaw muscles for clenching, grinding and TMJ related muscle pain at West Block Dental in Glenora, Edmonton, after an assessment. This is an off label use, and we usually try simpler options like a nightguard first. Results are not guaranteed.

Do muscle relaxing injections for jaw clenching work?

They may help some people. Research on Dysport and Botox injections into the jaw muscles suggests they can reduce pain and grinding for some patients, but the evidence is still limited. This use is off label in Canada, so we usually start with simpler options like a nightguard and talk through the pros, cons and risks first. Results are not guaranteed.

How long do jaw injections last?

The effect usually starts to build within one to two weeks and wears off gradually over several months, so treatment may be repeated if it helped. Timing varies from person to person, and results are not guaranteed.

Can jaw injections change my face shape?

Relaxing the masseter muscle can make it smaller over time, and some people notice a slimmer looking lower face. We talk about this with you before any treatment.

How much does Dysport for jaw clenching cost?

At West Block Dental, Dysport is $10 per unit. The number of units depends on your jaw muscles and is confirmed at your consult, so your actual cost is confirmed before any treatment.

How much is a custom nightguard?

A custom nightguard at West Block Dental is $817. Your actual cost, and how much your insurance may cover, is confirmed at your visit before we make it.

Are jaw injections for grinding covered by insurance?

Coverage depends on your plan. Some plans cover part of a nightguard, and coverage for jaw injections varies. We will check with your insurer and give you a written quote before treatment.

Nightguard or injections: which is better for grinding?

They do different jobs. A custom nightguard protects your teeth from wear and cracks. Injections relax the jaw muscles that do the clenching. Many people start with a nightguard. Dr. Kat will help you decide what fits your situation.

Is teeth grinding caused by stress?

Stress and anxiety are common triggers, especially for clenching during the day. Caffeine, alcohol, smoking, some medications and sleep problems such as sleep apnea can also play a part.

Can sleep apnea cause teeth grinding?

They are linked. People who grind at night are more likely to have sleep problems like snoring and sleep apnea. If we see signs, Dr. Kat may suggest a sleep study.

What happens if I ignore teeth grinding?

For many people it stays mild. Severe grinding can wear down, chip or crack teeth, damage fillings and crowns, and cause headaches and jaw pain.

Is TMJ the same as TMD?

TMJ is the jaw joint itself, just in front of your ears. TMD, often called TMJ disorder, means pain or problems in that joint and the muscles around it.

What TMJ treatment do you offer?

We start with an assessment of your jaw joints, muscles and bite. TMJ treatment options at West Block Dental include a custom nightguard ($817) to protect your teeth, and Dysport jaw muscle injections ($10 per unit) as a Botox alternative for clenching related muscle pain when it suits you. This use of Dysport is off label in Canada, and results are not guaranteed.
