Paying for it

Some plans cover part of orthodontic treatment, and some only cover children up to 18. We can send your plan to your insurer first. Clear aligners for cosmetic reasons are not a CDCP benefit, and CDCP orthodontic coverage through a general dentist is unlikely right now. Ask us if you are unsure. More on fees and insurance.

How it works

From scan to straight teeth

  1. Consult and scanWe look at your teeth, gums and bite and take a digital 3D scan. We can also run a treatment simulation so you get an idea of what the result could look like.
  2. Your planDr. Kat plans your treatment and explains timing, cost and options, including when braces or an orthodontist may suit you better.
  3. Your alignersYou wear each set as directed, usually most of the day and night, and switch to the next set on schedule.
  4. Check insWe usually see you at the one month mark, then every three months after that. Timing can vary if something comes up. We usually do not take on cases that would run longer than about 1.5 years.
  5. RetainersYour first set of retainers is included to help keep your new smile in place.

Brand question

SureSmile vs Invisalign

Invisalign is the best known name for clear aligners, so lots of people search for it when they mean any clear aligner. We do not offer Invisalign. We use SureSmile, made by Dentsply Sirona.

If you are looking for an Invisalign alternative, SureSmile works the same basic way: custom clear trays, planned by your dentist from a digital scan, changed on a schedule, with check ins along the way. We will not tell you one brand is better. We will tell you honestly whether aligners suit your teeth.

General dentist or orthodontist?

Both general dentists and orthodontists provide clear aligners. Orthodontists are specialists with extra years of training in tooth and jaw movement. Dr. Kat is a general dentist. For straightforward crowding and spacing, she can usually help. If your bite or jaw needs more, she will refer you.

Clear aligner questions

Do you offer Invisalign?

No. We do not offer Invisalign. We use SureSmile clear aligners, made by Dentsply Sirona. If you came looking for an Invisalign alternative, SureSmile is another brand of custom clear aligners planned and checked by your dentist.

What clear aligners do you use?

We use SureSmile clear aligners. Dr. Kat takes a digital scan, plans your treatment and checks your progress at regular visits.

How much do clear aligners cost at West Block Dental?

Full SureSmile clear aligner treatment is $6,150. That includes a complimentary consult, exam and digital scan, your aligners, progress checks, your first set of retainers, and refinements or extra trays for 3 years at no extra cost. Payment plans are available. Final cost is confirmed after your consult if your case needs something different, and we always give you a written quote first.

Is SureSmile a good Invisalign alternative?

SureSmile and Invisalign are both custom clear aligner systems planned and monitored by your dentist. We cannot promise one brand will work better for you. What matters most is a careful exam, a realistic plan and wearing your aligners as directed. Dr. Kat will tell you honestly if aligners are a good fit.

Are clear aligners the same as clear braces?

People often say clear braces when they mean clear aligners. Clear aligners are removable plastic trays. Clear braces can also mean tooth coloured brackets glued to your teeth. At West Block we offer SureSmile clear aligners.

Does insurance cover clear aligners in Alberta?

Some dental plans cover part of orthodontic treatment, and some only cover children up to age 18. We are happy to send your treatment plan to your insurer so you know what is covered before you start.

Do I need an orthodontist for clear aligners?

Not always. Many people with mild to moderate crowding or spacing can be treated by a general dentist. Dr. Kat is a general dentist, not an orthodontic specialist. If your teeth or bite need more complex care, she will refer you to an orthodontist.

How long does clear aligner treatment take?

It depends on how much your teeth need to move. Dr. Kat will give you an estimate at your consult.

Will clear aligners give me a lisp?

Some people notice a slight change in their speech for the first few days while they get used to aligners. For most people it settles as the tongue adjusts.

Can people see clear aligners?

Clear aligners are hard to notice in everyday life. Some treatments use small tooth coloured bumps called attachments, which help the aligners grip. They are removed at the end of treatment.

Can I drink coffee with clear aligners in?

Take your aligners out to eat and to drink anything other than water, then brush or rinse before putting them back in. This helps prevent staining and cavities.

Do I need a retainer after clear aligners?

Yes. Teeth can drift back after treatment, so a retainer keeps them in place. Your $6,150 treatment includes the first set of retainers.
